Well maybe that is a little bit of a hype, but the truth of my title is that Goddard College in Vermont will let you create your own personalized study plan, attend an 8 day residency one each semester, apply for up to 45 credits from your prior life learning and provide you with a world class accredited BA or MA degree.
Sound cool? You do not know the half of it.
Where else can you go to college and have all the students eager to continue talking about their studies late into the night? And if that does not seem odd to you, try this on: these people come from every age and demographic imaginable. There is little or no prejudice. (if anything, prejudice is the only target of intolerance!). The students study what moves them and the administration encourages extremely individualized study.
Sound easy? Think again.
When I worked for MCI in the late 90s telecommuting was all the rage. MCI realized that we would work harder, longer hours if we were not in the office. It was true. Traditional constrains aside, most telecommuters did not know when to stop. It was the ultimate key to unlocking an overachiever – let them work in their pajamas, in bed with a laptop on their legs and they would never shut it off.
The Goddard experience is not a free ride. Sure, you get to craft your own curriculum, but, you have to prove that you learned what you set out to. For me there could not be a more perfect set up. I have been self employed and self motivated for years. We home schooled our three children. Why shouldn't I be self educated?
I have long railed against the trend to eliminate critical thinking from our educational system. I have pushed those around me to engage in thoughtful action and sustainable, ecologically mindful behavior.
These are my people!
I have been saying that in an economy like this one the unemployed should go back to school if possible. Goddard is a shining star in the universe of higher educational offerings. For those of us who have been there, we have leaned to trust the (capital "P") process. For anyone whose curiosity is picked by this thought, you may belong at Goddard too.
Now if I could just figure out how to feed myself and pay my mortgage while I am doing this for the next 3 years…
Check out Goddard. http://bit.ly/2UGv90 They have some residencies in Port Townsend WA but the main campus is in Plainfield Vermont, not too far from Burlington.
